DALLAS, TX (November 7, 2011)— Like The Moth in New York or This American Life on NPR, Oral Fixation (An Obsession with True Life Tales) features high-stakes, personal, true stories revolving around a particular theme. Participants work with producer Nicole Stewart in an editing process that brings forth the truthiest, juiciest parts of their story. Then, they read their work onstage, sharing transformative moments of their life with the DFW community in an intimate setting. Brave and soulful, these readers speak from the heart. And it's freaking hilarious at times, human nature. And sometimes sexy.
The first of the five-show season will be held on Tuesday, November 15th at 7:30pm and celebrates the theme “Fresh Start.” The show features true tales of Katrina, getting arrested, and even a couple heartfelt songs from former Dallas Maverick Ray Johnston who after surviving leukemia started his own band, www.rayjohnstonband.com.
From her 6-year tenure as an actress in LA, Stewart conceived the notion to create Dallas’s first organized venture into the hip, fast-growing storytelling institution. Stewart says, “When my faltering career as an actress in Los Angeles wasn’t fulfilling my creative needs, I turned to the vibrant storytelling scene to express myself. No longer was I hiding behind characters, I was exploring my own truth and in turn becoming closer to my community. It is my honor to create a space for this ageless art form in my cherished hometown.”
Nicole Stewart is a cum laude graduate of The Hockaday School. She graduated summa cum laude with Honors in Theatre from Northwestern University in 2001. She has worked as an actress in Dallas, Chicago, London, New York, and California. She will be featured in the upcoming world premiere production of Time in Kafka at The Undermain Theatre in early 2012. She owns a private Pilates practice “Pilates with Nicole” and her workouts can be seen On-Demand. Stewart is the proud granddaughter of the late Juanita and Henry S. Miller, Jr.
Upcoming themes are “Home is Where the Heart Is” on December 13th and “One Night Stand” on March 13th. All shows will be held at The MAC in Uptown, 3120 McKinney Avenue, 75204. It’s a bright blue building and there is free parking in the lot.
