Biography Ray Johnston

A Texas-Sized Tale of Resilience and Music

Ray Johnston’s journey to becoming a celebrated Texas country artist is as inspirational as it is unlikely. A walk-on basketball player at the University of Alabama who defied the odds to make the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks roster, Ray’s hoop dreams were cut short by a devastating leukemia diagnosis. But like the upbeat melodies that define his music, Ray’s story is one of relentless optimism and triumph.

After five grueling battles with leukemia and a bone marrow transplant, Ray has been in remission for over a decade. This experience not only shaped his outlook on life but also birthed his musical career. “No Bad Days” isn’t just a catchy hook for Ray – it’s a life philosophy that permeates his music and performances.

Since founding the Ray Johnston Band in 2009, Ray has become a fixture in the Texas music scene, playing over 1,200 concerts and releasing multiple albums. His music, a blend of country, rock, and positive vibes, has earned him 9 singles on the Texas Music Charts and song placements on major networks like ABC, ESPN, and Netflix.

Ray’s unique background makes him a sought-after performer for corporate events, where his story of perseverance and positive attitude resonates deeply. His ability to tailor performances to diverse audiences, coupled with his inspiring personal journey, creates memorable experiences that go beyond just music.

Off-stage, Ray is quick to speak about the power of prayer, the importance of cancer research, and the value of living in the moment – lessons he learned firsthand during his own fight against leukemia. A cause close to Ray’s heart is Luke’s Fastbreaks, a charity that provides a thoughtful alternative to traditional hospital gowns. At many Ray Johnston Band shows, you’ll find Ray and his bandmates handing out these innovative shirts to audience members. Designed by cancer survivor Luke Lange, these shirts feature plastic snaps down the side, allowing patients to maintain dignity during medical procedures while giving healthcare providers easy access for scans and port treatments.

This hands-on approach to charity work exemplifies Ray’s commitment to making a tangible difference in the lives of cancer patients, seamlessly blending his musical performances with his mission to support and inspire those facing similar challenges to the ones he overcame.
